Working to Prevent Domestic Violence

I attended The Howard County Coalition to Prevent Interpersonal Personal Violence dialogue series on “The Role of Men in Preventing Intimate Partner Violence” where I was a member of a discussion panel. The vision of The Howard County Coalition to Prevent IPV is to educate constituents of Howard County and individuals throughout the State of Maryland to embrace eliminating intimate partner violence from our society with a sense of urgency.I discussed the role that the HCSO plays in cases of domestic violence and the enhanced training that law enforcement currently receives that enables agencies to better support victims as well as hold offenders accountable.

Police Unity Tour

I was glad to be able to participate in the Police Unity Tour for the 10th year. This 4-day bike ride from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. helps raise awareness for those officers and families who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. I met many survivors & supportive community members along the way! Thanks to my great sponsors for their generosity!

NAACP Freedom Fund Breakfast

I was honored to attend the NAACP Freedom Fund Jazz Breakfast and Awards Celebration. The theme was "The Year of the Woman" and so it was fitting that I was joined by last year's HCSO Deputy of the Year and the Howard County Employee of the Year, Deputy Ella Green...and her mother! Congratulations to all of the Award winners and thank you to Willie Flowers, Stephanie Wall, and Helen Nixon and their team for an inspiring morning.

Howard County Human Rights Commission’s Annual Awards Program

I was happy to attend the 2018 Human Rights Award recipients were Dr. Yen Li and The Build Haiti Foundation. Dr. Li is an educator, leader, bridge-builder and tireless advocate for Howard County’s Chinese and Korean communities. The Build Haiti Foundation focuses on service-learning projects with an emphasis on the impact of poverty on health and education. Congratulations to Dr. Li and The Build Haiti Foundation and thank you to Dr. Barbara Sands, the Administrator in the Office of Human Rights & the Human Rights Commission Executive Secretary for her dedication and leadership to the human rights of all citizens within the Howard County community.

2018 Crime Victims Memorial Service

I was honored to speak at today's National Crime Victims Memorial Service for Maryland's Northern Region. It was sad to see so many names of people we have lost. The survivors and their families are inspiring in their strength. The Sheriff's Office, the State's Attorney's Office and the Police Department have dedicated and compassionate victim advocates who help people find their "new normal". It is always good to see Crystal Mason Will, whose daughter was murdered 17 years ago. She offered words of comfort and hope to those who came to remember their loved ones.

African American Coalition Candidate Forum

Thanks to Sherman Howell, the African American Coalition of Howard County, and the MD Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta for hosting yesterday's Community Political Forum. It was great to see so many people I have worked with over the years and to meet new friends. More importantly, I appreciated the opportunity to answer questions about our plans to keep the Sheriff's Office moving forward.

Touring the Non-Profit Collaborative

It was great getting a tour of the Non-Profit Collaborative with the County Executive, the Comptroller and other County leaders. The collaborative brings many of our County's social service organizations together on one campus, making it much easier for people to receive help and for agencies to coordinate efforts. Congratulations to Jennifer Pollitt Hill on being recognized for the great work she and her team do on the problems of domestic violence and sexual assault

Protecting Victims of Domestic Violence

I am happy to support HB 1646 and SB 1036 (sponsored by Del Atterbeary and Sen. Will Smith), which will help protect victims of domestic violence. Among other things, it will prohibit those convicted of domestically related crimes from possessing certain firearms. The Sheriff's Office would be responsible for receiving any prohibited weapons, I appreciated meeting with members of Moms Demand Action to discuss this and other issues.

Deep Creek Dunk 2018!!!

I had a great time supporting Special Olympics at the Deep Creek Dunk this weekend with two of our great employees, Rhonda and JQ. Unfortunately for the athletes, the warm weather forced the cancellation of the Winter games. Still, we raised awareness and money for the programs that support our athletes.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Bailey

Sheriff McMahon joined other members of the Howard County community in celebrating Ms. Vivian “Millie” Bailey’s 100th birthday. Millie has been a huge asset to the Howard County community over the years. She has helped raise funds for Running Brook Elementary School, continues to prepare “care” packages for deployed troops and serves on the HCPD Citizens Advisory Council which Millie is a founding member. Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman and the members of the Howard County Council proclaimed last night that the entire month of February would be “Millie Bailey Month.” Happy Birthday and congratulations on a century of dedication and love to the Howard County Community!

During this Holiday Season, the HCSO is participating in Project Blue Light. Project Blue Light is a way for us to honor all law enforcement officers who serve and protect us while also remembering those who have died in the line of duty. The concept is simple and a great way to honor those who have fallen so please consider joining us by displaying a blue light in your homes and offices.

I was invited to be a panel member for “What Do We Have To Gain?”, a faith based forum & dialogue on Racism and Patriotism hosted by Congressman Elijah Cummings and featuring Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary and Rev. Dr. Robert Turner. This was a great event for members of the community to gather and discuss their different perspectives on racism, patriotism and other issues.
